According to the Mahāvamsa, a chronicle written in the Pāli language, the ancient period of Sri Lanka begins in 543 BC with the landing of Vijaya, a semi-legendary prince who sailed with 700 followers on eight ships 860 nautical miles to Sri Lanka from the southwest coast of what is now the Rarh region of West Bengal.[33] He established the Kingdom of Tambapanni, near modern day Mannar. Vijaya is the first of the approximately 189 native monarchs of Sri Lanka described in chronicles such as the Dipavamsa, Mahāvamsa, Chulavamsa, and Rājāvaliya (see List of Sri Lankan monarchs). Sri Lankan dynastic history spanned a period of 2,359 years from 543 BC to AD 1815, when the land became part of the British Empire

سريلانكا أو سري لانكا جوهرة المحيط الهندي و بلد التناقضات و العجائب و الأساطير ، كان يسميها العرب سرنديب و عرفت باسم سيلان إلى عام 1972م و تسمى رسميا جمهورية سريلانكا الديمقراطية الاشتراكية . و هي جزيرة كبيرة في المحيط الهندي جنوب الهند ، تبعد حوالي 31 كيلومتراً (19،3 ميل) من الساحل الجنوبي للهند، شهدت أعمال عنف من قبل متمردي نمور التاميل الانفصاليين في الفترة من 1983 إلى 2001 و التي انتهت بمقتل زعيمها أواخر عام 2009م .
و اكتسبت سريلانكا أهميتها في القديم بسبب موقعها على أحد الطرق البحرية الرئيسية، حيث تربط بين غرب آسيا وجنوب شرق آسيا، وكانت مركزا للديانة البوذية منذ العصور القديمة. واليوم فان هذا البلد متعدد الأديان والأعراق أمة مع ما يقرب من ثلث السكان من أتباع البوذية والبقية من الديانات الأخرى، ولا سيما الهندوسية والإسلام والمسيحية .
السنهاليين يشكلون غالبية السكان إضافة إلى التاميل، الذين يتمركزون في شمال وشرق الجزيرة، والذين يشكلون أكبر أقلية عرقية. الطوائف الأخرى وتشمل الأراضي البور والمسلمين المالاويين .
